5th Dan Shitoryu/Shukokai
Sensei Jason Nichols started his martial arts training at the age of 14 under the guidance and instruction of Sensei Bob Shearwood and Sensei Alan Murdoch in Shukokai. In 1989, he achieved his Senior Blackbelt from Sensei Tommy Morris (President of Kobe Osaka International and 8th Dan Shitoryu/Shukokai). In 1994, he began training at Blackburn Karate Club under Sensei Richard Callaghan (6th Dan Shukokai) and has been the part of the fabric ever since.
In 2011 he started Sakura Karate Club – Kobe Osaka in Bayswater North in a full time, professional capacity. He currently holds a Level 2 Silver Coaching Accreditation with the Australian Sports Commission as well as holding National Kumite and Kata ‘A’ Referee Qualifications with the Australian Karate Federation. He also sits on the Karate Victoria Referee Commission. In 2017 he was a State Kata Coach with the Victorian Karate Team. As per Government requirements, he also has current Working With Children Check and First Aid qualifications.
He has travelled extensively internationally, having competed in 4 Kobe Osaka World Cups, having medaled in Bulgaria (bronze 2007) and Malaysia (silver 2009) in Male Kata competition. He teaches all aspects of traditional Japanese karate as well as fitness for his students at Sakura.

4th Dan Shitoryu/Shukokai
Sensei Laura has been training in karate since 1988 and achieved her Senior Blackbelt in the early 1990’s. She also trained at our partner dojo (Blackburn Karate Club) under Sensei Richard Callaghan.
She is a Senior Instructor at Sakura Karate and also holds qualifications in secondary teaching. She is a Level 1 Karate Coach and First Aid trained. She is a fantastic instructor, especially with the children and we are very lucky to have her at Sakura Karate Club.
She has competed Internationally in Kata and participated in 3 Kobe Osaka World Cups. She also loves keeping fit and healthy and participates in our fitness classes.

Kobe Osaka International
Sensei Tommy Morris 8th Dan Shitoryu
Sakura Karate Club are proud members of Kobe Osaka International. KOI Chief Instructor Shihan Tommy Morris, who trained under Shukokai masters Chojiro Tani and Shigeru Kimura, is the president of Kobe Osaka. He was awarded 8th Dan in 2003 by the World Karate Federation (WKF). He visits Sakura every September to hold his annual seminar and international grading.
He is accompanied every year by his son, Sensei Steven Morris 7th Dan Shukokai who is a world renowned Kata specialist. He competed at the very highest level in Kata, including WKF Senior World Championships. He was a 15 time British Open Kata Champion undefeated and a 7 time Scottish Open Kata Champion.
