Chief Instructor – Sensei Jason Nichols

Sensei Jason Nichols has been involved in martial arts since the age of 14. He attained his Senior Blackbelt in 1990 under the watchful eye of Kobe Osaka International Chief Instructor, Sensei Tommy Morris 8th Dan Shukokai. He currently holds the rank of 5th Dan in Shukokai/Shitoryu karate.

Throughout his 35 years of training and teaching he competed at local, state, national and international levels. He competed in 4 Kobe Osaka World Cups internationally in Asia and Europe, taking bronze and silver in Men’s Kata.

He is well known and recognised for his commitment and dedication to Kata and was a Victorian State Kata Coach in 2017. He is also an AKF National Kumite Referee and Kata Judge currently holding ‘Level A’ qualifications for both disciplines.

He also holds a Level 2 Silver Karate Coaching qualification with the NCAS via the Australian Karate Federation. A background in Traditional JiuJitsu allows Jason to teach this discipline to his students. Jason’s passion is Sakura and he teaches in a full time capacity as a Professional Karate Instructor, Mentor and Coach.

He leads a quality team of highly experienced instructors whose mission mirrors his – Making people better.

Our leaders

Sensei Laura Luscombe

Sensei Laura has been training karate since 1988 and currently holds the rank of 4th Dan Blackbelt. She is a Senior Instructor at Sakura Karate and holds qualifications in secondary teaching. She is also a Level 1 Karate Coach, First Aid trained and holds a Working with Children card. She is a fantastic instructor and we are very lucky to have her at Sakura Karate Club. She has competed Internationally in Kata and participated in 3 Kobe Osaka World Cups.

Sensei Anthony Brescia

Sensei Anthony is a 3rd Dan Blackbelt at Sakura and has been training for nearly 25 years in martial arts. He also currently works in the school education system helping students with learning difficulties. He is also a Level 1 Karate Coach, First Aid trained and holds the required Working With Children card. His passion is kata and he has competed and won many events during his competition years. His entire family also trains with us at Sakura.

Sensei Timothy Orr

Sensei Tim is currently a 2nd Dan Blackbelt with Sakura. He works in the corporate sector in building, design, construction and project management. He has a background in the military and also manages our Spartans Fitness Team. He has competed in many tournaments throughout his martial arts journey, having also trained in different systems. His achievements in the ‘Spartan Races’ over the past 2 years has been a fantastic reward for his commitment and determination to be the best he can be.

Sensei Brad Rutzou

Sensei Brad recently graded to his 1st Dan Blackbelt and has been training at Sakura for the past 6 years. He is a traditional martial artist and a fantastic instructor in the making. He teaches both our Warriors and Adults and is an absolute asset to Sakura Karate Club. His daughter also recently graded for her Junior Blackbelt at the same grading. It was a fantastic occasion for both. Sensei Brad is also involved in our Spartans Team and trains hard to keep his fitness levels to the standard required for Karate and Spartans.

Sakura Karate Club are proud members of Kobe Osaka International. KOI Chief Instructor Shihan Tommy Morris, who trained under Shukokai masters Chojiro Tani and Shigeru Kimura, is the president of Kobe Osaka. He was awarded 8th Dan in 2003 by the World Karate Federation (WKF). He visits Sakura every September to hold his annual seminar and international grading.

He is accompanied every year by his son, Sensei Steven Morris 7th Dan Shukokai who is a world renowned Kata specialist. He competed at the very highest level in Kata, including WKF Senior World Championships. He was a 15 time British Open Kata Champion undefeated and a 7 time Scottish Open Kata Champion.
